おとそは「お屠蘇」と書くように、とそ＝悪鬼を屠り、死者を蘇らせるという意味があります。「邪気を払い、不老長寿になれる薬酒」として中国の唐時代から飲まれるようになり、日本には平安時代に伝わったそうです。年の若い者から順番に飲むことで、年少者の若さを年長者に受け渡す意味があるとされています。
